The Roman Empire would last for centuries after this. Some of its most famous conquests and figures come from the Imperial period.
In 50 AD the forces of Rome invaded the island of Briton, conquering and subjugating the people who lived there and putting in place Roman rule which would last for almost four hundred years. The Roman’s built many towns, roads and cities which are still around today.
For instance:
- the English city of Bath was founded by the Romans as a sort of wellness spa.
- Hadrian’s Wall, built by the Roman Emperor Hadrian across the North of England, was constructed to keep the Picts (from Scotland) from attacking into Roman Briton.
- The Romans built a seaport near the mouth of the Thames River because that was the best place to bring in ships carrying goods (and people) from Europe. The sea port they built eventually became a city named Londinium. Today we know it as London.
Imagine travelling in time back to the Ancient past!
