In about 50 BC a powerful Roman general named Julius Caesar tried to take power and become dictator. This had never happened under the Roman Republic, but Caesar was not only brave and cunning, he was also enormously popular – loved by the people.
in 44 BC Caesar was assassinated by the Roman Senate (stabbed forty-four times!) and the Empire was plunged into a brutal civil war.
On one side were those who had assassinated Caesar, led by a general named Mark Antony. On the other was Caesar’s adopted son Octavius.
The war raged for years before Octavius finally prevailed, defeating Mark Antony’s forces and causing Mark Antony and his lover, the Egyptian Queen Cleopatra, to kill themselves.
Peace prevailed and Octavius, changing his name to Caesar Augustus, was proclaimed the new ruler of the Roman Empire.
Rome had its first Emperor.
Augustus Ceasar.
And his distant successor - A Boy Called Romulus
